Destination Kenya
Ascending this route presents a formidable challenge: it's rugged underfoot, the trail is overgrown and frequented more by elephants than humans, it becomes muddy when wet, there are no huts for shelter, and it features dense expanses of giant bamboo and montane forest. So, you might wonder, why would anyone choose this path? The answer lies in its appeal to true wilderness enthusiasts.
This route was initially explored during colonial times but fell into disuse for many years until its revival in the early '90s. It offers a unique and entirely unspoiled mountain trekking adventure. Climbing up to Point Lenana and then descending via the Chogoria route delivers the most breathtaking vistas and completes a traverse of Mount Kenya.
The descent is a gentle hike along a wide ridge, allowing you to relish magnificent views back up the valley towards the snow-capped peaks of Mount Kenya. Additionally, you'll be treated to the sight of waterfalls, tarns, and lava flows in the Gorges Valley itself. You'll spend the night in the Meru Mt. Kenya cabins, where you can enjoy comforts such as log fires, hot showers, and comfortable beds. If the supply vehicles have managed to navigate through the forest, you might even savor a cold Tusker beer! In the evening, wildlife viewing is possible, with elephants and buffalo often grazing near the cabins, and a variety of forest and moorland birds provide a captivating backdrop.
Start your journey from Nairobi with pick up from your hotel or airport and head to Nanyuki in a public shuttle van (private transfer can be organised at an extra cost), arrive in time for lunch. Afterward, drive to Gathiuru forest station and commence a 4-hour ascent through dense stands of towering bamboo to reach the Giant Bamboo Campsite at 2600m. In the forest, there are many species of brightly coloured birds, such as Hartlaub’s Turaco, the malachite sunbird, and different species of monkeys. Encounter elephants and buffalo, which are common in this area.
The lush bamboo gives way to vast podocarpus and pencil cedar forests as you ascend through the Hagenia rosewood zone at the edge of the moorlands. Lunch is enjoyed in this zone before continuing the hike through extraordinary giant lobelia and groundsels. Spend the night near the sheer lava cliffs of the "Highland Castle" at 3,700m. This day's hike takes approximately 5-6 hours with an ascent of 1,100m.
Marvel at the spectacular scenery as jagged volcanic peaks and shimmering glaciers dominate the landscape along the summit circuit. Turquoise tarns are nestled in the valleys, and eagles and buzzards soar overhead, creating an atmosphere that belies the equatorial location. This is where you may encounter other trekkers for the first time. Hike for 5-6 hours and spend the night at Shipton Campsite at 4,200m.
Set out before dawn for the summit attempt, ascending steep screes and a rocky track to reach the summit. It's a thrilling 3-hour climb from here to reach Pt Lenana, the hiker's summit, at 4,985m in time for the sunrise. On a clear day, you may even spot Kilimanjaro, located approximately 340 kilometers to the south. Descend for 2-3 hours to Hall Tarns (4,300m), where a substantial breakfast awaits. Spend the day here resting and relaxing. The campsite is perched near the top of a sheer 300-meter cliff overlooking the Gorges Valley.
Descend gently along a broad ridge, enjoying magnificent views of the snowy peaks up the valley and the waterfalls, tarns, and lava flows in the Gorges Valley below. Spend the night in the Meru Mt. Kenya campsite, where you can enjoy creature comforts like log fires, hot showers, and comfortable beds. If supply vehicles have made it through the forest, you might even have the chance to enjoy a Tusker beer! In the evening, watch for wildlife, as elephants and buffalo often graze nearby, and numerous forest and moorland birds provide a captivating natural soundtrack.
Embark on a three-hour walk through the bamboo forest, descending to meet your vehicles for the return journey to Nairobi, arriving in the late afternoon.
