Destination Kenya
Discover one of the most sought-after African trekking adventures that seamlessly combine two of the most picturesque routes up Mount Kenya: Sirimon and Chogoria. This expedition offers a breathtakingly diverse and scenic trekking experience. The Sirimon route, originating from the western side of Mount Kenya, takes you through the arid terrain adorned with colossal trees and rocky landscapes. In stark contrast, the descent along the Chogoria path leads you into a lush world of bamboo forests and highland greenery.
While the final nighttime ascent to Point Lenana can be quite challenging, resembling some of the toughest ascents in East Africa, the overall trek is generally considered more manageable compared to scaling Kilimanjaro or the Rwenzoris. Moreover, it offers the unique opportunity to spot significant wildlife. During this trek, accommodation is provided in mountain huts, but if you prefer camping, you have the option to camp on all nights on the mountain.
After being picked up in Nairobi, we'll drive to Nanyuki town for lunch, crossing the equator en route to the Sirimon Park gate (2660m). From there, we embark on a trek through magnificent montane forests, bamboo forests, and the expansive heather zone before reaching the high-altitude moorland, where our first hut, Old Moses campsite (3,300m), awaits. Dinner and overnight stay here. This is a gentle trek lasting 3-4 hours, with an elevation gain of 680m.
Following breakfast, we continue our ascent, taking the right fork at a junction. After a water break, we follow the trail, crossing Ontulili River and then contouring through the Moorland. We cross Liki North River and continue uphill to Mackinders Valley, where panoramic views of the Shipton Campsite and its towering peaks and glaciers greet us. Shipton Campsite is a surreal setting inhabited by rock hyraxes and sunbirds.
To aid acclimatization, you can opt for a rest day at Shipton Camp. Short walks or day hikes are possible, including a summit climb to Oblong and Hausberg tarns, gaining an elevation of 370m before returning to the camp for lunch. The afternoon is free for leisure activities. Climbing high and sleeping low is an excellent strategy for acclimatization, and you can observe this technique while enjoying the sunshine and watching eagles.
Begin your ascent at 3 a.m. to reach Point Lenana in time for the mesmerizing African sunrise. The climb commences on frozen scree and continues on a rocky path, featuring some minor scrambling. If the moon is bright, a torch may not be necessary. The absence of light pollution allows for a stunning view of the stars, making it one of the best stargazing spots on Earth. The climb takes 3-4 hours, and on clear nights, you can even spot Mt. Kilimanjaro on the horizon. Descend to Minto's Hut for a full breakfast, and after a short rest, continue descending to Mt. Kenya Bandas through the Gorges valley. Along the way, you'll enjoy splendid views of the Temple, Lake Michaelson, Mushroom rocks, and Giant's Billiards Table Mountain. Dinner and overnight stay at Mt. Kenya Bandas campsite.
After breakfast, descend on a broad trail that winds through bamboo and untouched rainforests until you reach a meeting point with a vehicle for transfer to Chogoria town. From there, continue to Nairobi, arriving by 17:00 hrs.
