Destination Kenya
The Chogoria route stands out as our recommended African Climbing Tour, and it is arguably the most breathtaking path to reach the summit area of Mount Kenya. This route is renowned for being the driest ascent up the mountain, and the journey alongside it offers truly spectacular views.
The descent via the Sirimon route guides you through enchanting forest tracks, effectively completing the traverse of the mountain. Accommodation on this trek consists of one night in mountain huts and three nights of camping. Nevertheless, if you prefer camping, you have the option to camp throughout the entire night on the mountain. Key Highlights:
- 1. Combining two of the most scenic routes on Mount Kenya.
- 2. Enjoying spectacular views of the mountain as you traverse the Gorges valley.
- 3. Encountering varied mountain vegetation, ranging from rainforests and bamboo forests to moorlands and giant lobelia zones.
- 4. Having the opportunity to acclimatize at 3,300 meters.
We depart from Nairobi at 0800hrs and drive through agricultural countryside to reach Chogoria town for lunch. After lunch, we continue driving to the edge of the bamboo forest, where our trek commences. We will hike through the dense bamboo forest for a distance of 10 km, eventually reaching the Mt. Kenya Bandas. Dinner and overnight stay will be at the Mount Kenya Bandas camp.
Following breakfast and organizing porter loads, we start our ascent up the mountain at a comfortable pace. A slightly longer route via Lake Ellis offers scenic views of Mugi, Ithanguni, and the Giants Billiards Table. Alternatively, if we follow the river near the roadhead upstream for about 3 km, we are treated to particularly beautiful foreground scenery and flora. Lunch is enjoyed by the banks of a stream, and then we hike up the left-hand hillside to reach our campsite at approximately 3,600m, far from the more "touristy" areas.
We embark on a similar early start, venturing well off the beaten track as we follow a ridge up the mountain for approximately 3 hours. Eventually, we join the tourist track on the usual Chogoria route at an altitude of about 4,100m. This leg of the journey offers breathtaking views over the Gorges Valley and back toward Ithanguni and the Northern Moorlands. Lunch is served at a small stream crossing, followed by another hour of hiking to reach the Mintos campsite area at 4,200m, where we will spend the night. In the afternoon, you can relax at the camp, but a 10-minute walk to the "Temple" is highly recommended. The "Temple" is a 150-meter vertical cliff named for the posture visitors often adopt when peering over the edge – they look as if they are praying. An early night is advised since you'll be attempting the summit the next day.
Our predawn summit attempt begins at 0300hrs, and you'll hike for about three hours to reach Point Lenana (4,985m), known as the hiker's summit, just in time to witness the African sunrise. Afterward, you'll descend to Shipton camp for breakfast. Following breakfast, a 3-hour descent via Mackinder's valley will take you to the Liki North campsite (3,900m). The descent is gentle, offering ample time to savor the fascinating scenery, including the moorlands, before reaching the campsite. Dinner and overnight at Liki North camp.
After an early morning breakfast, you'll descend for 2-3 hours to Old Moses camp, where you'll catch a vehicle for the transfer back to Nairobi, arriving in the late afternoon.
