Destination Kenya
The Chogoria route stands as our top recommendation and is arguably the most splendid path to reach the summit area. It is the driest route leading up the mountain, and the trek alongside the Gorges Valley is undeniably breathtaking. This expedition grants you a generous 7 days to acclimatize and ascend the mountain safely. The 'Round the Peaks' circuit, rightfully celebrated, offers constantly changing vistas of the summits, glaciers, and tarns, along with their unique high-altitude flora. The descent via the Sirimon route takes you through enchanting forest tracks, completing the traverse of the mountain.
Accommodation on this expedition includes 4 nights in mountain huts and 2 nights of camping. However, if you prefer camping, you have the option to camp throughout the entire journey.
Commence your journey with a pick-up from your Nairobi hotel at 7 am, followed by a drive to Chogoria town for an early lunch. Afterward, you'll board a transfer vehicle to reach the forest clearance, situated 16km from the starting point of your walk. This 16km hike takes you through the montane forest, bamboo groves, and the giant heather zone along a sometimes muddy dirt road. You will also traverse high-altitude moorland, eventually arriving at Mount Meru Bandas campsite (2950m) in approximately 4 hours. Here, you'll have dinner and spend the night. Meal Plan (Lunch, Dinner).
Following breakfast, follow the trail through the giant heather and forest until you reach the Chogoria road head. From this point, the path descends to cross a stream and then follows the broad ridge to the east of the Gorges Valley. After about 3 hours of hiking, you'll reach Road Head Campsite (3300m) where you will overnight. Meal Plan (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner).
After breakfast, continue along the trail through the giant heather and forest, heading toward Chogoria road head. The path drops to cross a stream and then ascends the broad ridge to the east of the Gorges Valley, eventually leading you to Mintos Hut campsite (4200m). Here, you'll have dinner and rest for the night. Meal Plan (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner).
Begin your journey shortly after midnight at 2 am, making your way towards the main peaks. The trail splits after an hour, above a flat green area known as Temple Fields, located at the head of the valley. By 6:30 am, you'll reach Point Lenana, capturing the sunrise's beauty along the way. After taking in the breathtaking views, you'll descend via the Naro Moru route, heading to Mackinders campsite for breakfast. Continue your hike, eventually reaching Met Station campsite (3000m) where you'll have dinner and spend the night. Meal Plan (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner).
Following breakfast, descend through the rainforest over a 9km distance to Naro Moru Park Gate, situated at 2,600m. Here, you'll connect with transportation back to Nairobi, arriving at approximately 3 pm. Meal Plan (Breakfast, Lunch).
