Destination Kenya
Our recommended and arguably the most splendid path to reach the summit area is the Chogoria route. This route offers the driest ascent up the mountain, and the trek alongside the Gorges Valley unveils truly spectacular scenery. The descent, following the Sirimon route, guides you through enchanting forest tracks, providing a comprehensive traverse of the mountain.
Depart from Nairobi in the morning, driving through the picturesque agricultural countryside up to Mount Kenya with a brief lunch break. After lunch, we embark on a walk towards Lake Ellis, offering scenic views of Mugi Hill, Ithanguni, and the Giant’s Billiards Table—awe-inspiring land formations found nowhere else in Africa. If we choose to follow the river near the road-head upstream for about 3 km, we are greeted with particularly beautiful foreground scenery and flora. The hike takes us to the secluded campsite on the shores of Lake Ellis at an altitude of 3400m (3 hours of walking). Enjoy dinner and spend the night at Lake Ellis campsite.
After breakfast, we follow a ridge up the mountain for approximately 3 hours, eventually joining the tourist track on the normal Chogoria route at an altitude of about 4,100m. This leg of the journey offers breathtaking views over the Gorges Valley and back towards Ithanguni and the Northern Moorlands. Lunch is served at a small stream crossing, and we continue for another hour to reach the Mintos Hut area at 4200m, where we spend the night. In the afternoon, you can relax at the campsite, or take a 10-minute walk to the "Temple," a 150-meter vertical cliff with a name derived from the position visitors often adopt when peering over the edge—they look as if they are praying. An early night is recommended since you will be attempting the summit the next day.
The predawn summit attempt starts at 0300hrs, and you hike for about three hours up to Point Lenana (4985m), the hiker's summit, arriving in time to witness the African sunrise. Descend to Shipton camp for breakfast, and after breakfast, embark on a 3-hour descent via Mackinder's valley to the Liki North camp (3,900m). The descent is gentle and provides ample time to savor the captivating scenery, including the moorlands, before reaching the campsite. Enjoy dinner and spend the night at Liki North campsite.
After an early morning breakfast, descend for 2-3 hours to Old Moses camp to catch a vehicle for transfer back to Nairobi, arriving late in the afternoon.
