The Selous Game Reserve, now officially known as Nyerere National Park, is a vast wildlife sanctuary situated in the southern extension of the Mikumi National Park, spanning an expansive 54,490 square kilometers (21,000 square miles). Primarily recognized as an elephant reserve, the landscape is dominated by brachystegia woodlands, interspersed with grassy floodplains and pockets of dense forest, much of which remains challenging to access.
Apart from its significant elephant population, the reserve is home to a diverse array of wildlife, including hippopotamuses, buffaloes, wildebeests, Lichtenstein's hartebeests, sable antelopes, greater kudus, elands, as well as formidable predators like lions and leopards. The avian life mirrors that of the nearby Mikumi National Park.
For optimal wildlife viewing, it is recommended to plan visits to the Selous Game Reserve between June and November. During this period, the reserve showcases its diverse fauna as animals congregate around water sources. It's important to note that outside this timeframe, certain areas of the reserve may be prone to flooding, affecting accessibility and the overall safari experience.
