Destination Kenya
This route offers adventurers the quintessential Kilimanjaro climbing experience, presenting expansive vistas and an exhilarating hiking journey leading to the summit of Uhuru Peak. However, it possesses unique features that distinguish it from other routes, giving the Marangu route its distinct character and ambiance.
Marangu Route
Starting Point for Marangu Route
One notable aspect of the Marangu Route is its distinction as the sole path up Mount Kilimanjaro that prohibits camping. Instead of sleeping in tents, trekkers lodge in permanent huts. These dormitory-style shelters provide added protection from wind and rain, making the route particularly popular for those climbing during the rainy season in April and May. Mandara and Kibo Huts each house 60 bunk beds, while Horombo Hut boasts 120 bunk beds.
During their stay in these huts, trekkers rest on bunk beds furnished with basic mattresses and pillows. Additionally, a variety of candy bars, bottled water, and soft drinks are available for purchase, earning the Marangu Route the moniker "Coca-Cola Route."
Known for its gradual ascent to the daily camps, the Marangu Route has gained a reputation as the easiest trekking route on Kilimanjaro. However, it should not be underestimated, especially on the approach to the final camp, which involves a physically demanding ascent with roughly 1000 meters of vertical gain in a single day.
Summit day on Kilimanjaro is always challenging, regardless of the chosen route, making the triumphant steps onto the top all the more gratifying. As one of the shortest treks to the summit, requiring only five days to reach Uhuru Peak, the Marangu Route is a favored choice among trekkers with limited time for their climb.
Detailed Itinerary for the Marangu Route
Below is a comprehensive 5-night/6-day journey up Kilimanjaro through the Marangu Route. If you prefer a shorter route of 5 days, you can skip the Acclimatization Day and proceed directly from the Horombo Huts to the Kibo Huts in a single day.
After breakfast, depart Arusha and head to the southeast entrance of Kilimanjaro National Park, known as Marangu Gate. Upon arrival, check-in and register to commence your ascent of Kilimanjaro. The initial part of the route leads through woods and the rainforest, offering views of eucalyptus trees and various bird species. Keep an eye out for Colobus monkeys. Adequate equipment and footwear are essential due to the potentially wet and muddy soil at lower altitudes.

On day 2, traverse the final stretch of woodland as the expansive moorland unfolds. Enjoy the sight of Mawenzi's jagged peaks reaching into the African skies.
