Destination Kenya
Welcome to Kenya’s capital city. An awaiting Grayton Expeditions Safari airport representative accompanies you to the Hotel where our rooms are ready and waiting. Dinner and overnight will be at the Hemmingways Nairobi.
The initial day is always bustling and filled with excitement. It commences with a comprehensive safari briefing at the hotel, followed by an in-depth lecture led by our tour guide/driver. The day's agenda proceeds with a city tour, which includes a private luncheon at the Carnival Restaurant. Additionally, we'll visit the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust Elephant Orphanage, situated just outside the city.
This remarkable project is dedicated to the rescue and care of orphaned elephants, providing them sanctuary when their mothers fall victim to potential poachers. These elephants are nurtured until they reach an age suitable for release back into their natural habitat. During your visit, you'll have the option to adopt one of these elephants for an additional $50, allowing you the opportunity to return at a later time to see the progress of your adopted elephant.
Another captivating stop on our itinerary is the Giraffe Centre, an elevated treetop sanctuary where you can hand-feed giraffes, literally coming face to face with these graceful creatures. Here, a resident expert will also provide a private briefing on the center's dedicated efforts to conserve the endangered Rothschild Giraffe.
In the afternoon, your guide will escort you to a community school or orphanage, where activities may include leading a Zumba class, reading to students, or participating in playground activities. Specific plans will be developed based on the location identified for this visit. Following this heartwarming excursion, you'll return to your hotel, where you'll have free time in the evening to unwind and relax. Dinner and overnight at The Hemmingways Nairobi.
We'll embark on a journey to the bush, traveling by light aircraft as we set our course for Lewa Downs, nestled in the foothills of Mount Kenya. Lewa Downs has been described as a private home, a private ranch, and a private paradise, and we wholeheartedly concur. The claim that game viewing in this region is among the finest in East Africa is certainly no exaggeration, offering a plethora of viewing opportunities.
You can witness wildlife from every conceivable angle and mode: whether it's through an open-top vehicle, day or night; on foot, guided by a professional tracker; jogging alongside a Maasai warrior; sitting quietly in a blind with a thermos of hot coffee and a captivating book; or even exploring on horseback, with steeds so gentle that even a five-year-old can ride comfortably for hours. Following these exhilarating activities, you'll have the chance to tour Lewa's community weaving and furniture workshops, visit the organic garden that supplies the lodge's fresh fruits and vegetables, engage in a game of tennis, explore the nearby ancient archaeological site, take a refreshing swim in the pool, or simply unwind on the terrace with a pair of binoculars, spotting the "Big Five" from the comfort of your lounge chair. As for accommodations, Lewa Downs offers a divine blend of British coziness and safari chic. In simple terms, a safari experience at Lewa Downs is nothing short of perfection.
Indeed, every bush home exudes an air of sheer perfection. Take, for instance, Loisaba, a destination that elevates luxury, seclusion, and adventure to astonishing new heights. Nestled at the edge of a towering escarpment within a secluded glade, Loisaba was originally conceived as the Kenyan residence of the late Italian Count Ancilotto. He worked his magic on its sprawling 60,000 acres, transforming what was once a struggling cattle ranch into a thriving venture focused on alternative land use. In the process, he crafted a wilderness paradise, a privilege enjoyed by only a select few.
His personal residence, which occasionally opens its doors to private groups, is nothing short of divine (Italian nobility, after all, possesses impeccable taste). Additionally, the delightful lodge at Loisaba offers a range of activities that stretch the boundaries of our wildest imaginations. How about trying your hand at Grayton Expeditions flying safari? Or perhaps venturing into quad biking adventures across the escarpment, navigating the Ewaso Nyiro River on a thrilling rafting excursion, embarking on four-wheel drives through the rugged canyons carved by two great rivers, or trekking alongside camels? All of this, of course, is complemented by exceptional game viewing opportunities.
And let's not forget the star beds! If you wish, you can spend an evening in a luxurious four-poster bed beneath the vast equatorial night sky, where the boundless celestial expanse serves as your ceiling. It's an experience that defies ordinary description—it's truly extraordinary.
"If you wish to trace the lineage of safari excellence, Cottar's is the destination," beckons another short flight and yet another extraordinary journey, this time hosted by the owners themselves. Today, Cottar's stands as the epitome of luxurious camping. Scattered throughout the camp, you'll discover cherished family heirlooms from the Cottar lineage, from the vintage Victrola to the gleaming silver tea service.
Each guest tent, featuring its very own butler, offers an opulent experience with its white canvas structure adorned with antique furnishings. Illuminated by lanterns, these tents boast private en-suite dressing rooms and bathrooms, complete with a standalone bathtub—an oasis of comfort and indulgence. Cottar's fortuitous location in the Mara, situated on a concession of private land bordering the Serengeti, ensures an abundance of captivating game drives. These drives can be enjoyed in the shimmering morning light, the golden hues of late afternoon, or beneath the radiant glow of the moon—each experience incomparable to the last.
We board a flight back to Nairobi and return to our delightful inn, which feels like a homecoming. If we desire, a vehicle is readily available for us to explore the town for a brief bout of sightseeing or shopping. Following dinner, we embark on our international flight, arriving back home the following day.
